On June 3, 2011, a federal grand jury indicted former U.S. senator and two-time Democratic presidential candidate John Edwards on six felony charges. Prosecutors argue that money donated to Edwards' presidential campaign was used to cover up his affair with staffer Rielle Hunter and the resulting pregnancy and birth of their daughter. Edwards long denied the affair before admitting to fathering the child. His defense maintains that the payments weren't campaign contributions, only personal gifts to help Edwards hide the affair from his wife. He went on trial on the charges on April 23, 2012, and after nine days of deliberations, a jury acquitted him on one charge on May 31, 2012, but couldn't reach a verdict on the other five, forcing the judge to declare a mistrial.
