The nearly 37,000 inmates in North Carolina's 61 state prisons do a lot of reading, but what they're able to get inside is limited. Prison staff and a Publication Review Committee inspect books to catch contraband and prohibited content, such as pornography and violent material. Prison staff can deny publications for 17 different reasons.

To put readers to the test, WRAL News requested a list of books the committee rejected in 2013. Since there is no list of approved books for prisoners, WRAL acquired a list of titles stocked at a prison library in Raleigh.
