Thousands of people were killed Nov. 8, 2013, when Typhoon Haiyan unleashed ferocious winds and giant waves that washed away homes and schools in the Philippines. Many organizations are reaching out to help those affected by this natural disaster. Below is a list of organizations aiding in recovery efforts:
American Red Cross

Philippine Nurses Association of America
- The Philippine Nurses Association is collecting money and supplies in hopes of sending a medical mission to the hardest-hit areas of their homeland.

Deploying disaster team and aiding in rebuilding efforts.

Operation USA
Working in the Philippines since 1986, this group provides water purification, chemicals, shelter materials, medicine and medical equipment to those in need.

They have a team deployed and are providing basic necessities like temporary shelter, clean water, food and hygiene items.

Helping children and their families with urgent needs like clean water and emergency shelter. Also establishes child-friendly spaces so children can be in a safe environment.

- The World Food Programme said it will send more than 40 tons of high energy biscuits and work with the Filipino government to help with logistics and emergency communications systems. It asks for donations at www.wfpusa.org or by texting the word AID to 27722 to instantly donate $10.
Catholic Relief Services
- Catholic Relief Services is accepting donations on its website, emergencies.crs.org, as it begins moving supplies and staff to respond to the typhoon.
American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee
- The American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee has begun collecting donations for relief efforts. To contribute, go to www.jdc.org or call 212-687-6200.
Stop Hunger Now
- Stop Hunger Now aims to end hunger by providing food and life-saving aid to the world's most vulnerable.
